The client of this <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_Bible" target="_blank">Geneva Bible</a></i> asked me to take series of pictures of the restoration process, which included the brief steps of <i>Cambridge</i> on the front and back covers. Just for the sake of it, I thought I should put them on my blog in case someone wants to know how it's done. As you see, it's a no brainer; it's basically the same concept as stencil, and hand-tooling the framing with or without gold at the end.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the way, this common design is called <i>Cambridge</i> because it became popular among binders in Cambridge in the 18th century.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, if you are interested in acquiring this particular <i>Geneva Bible</i> that I restored, contact<a href="https://www.arundelbooks.com/" target="_blank"> Arundel Books</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just to maintain the momentum of keeping up with my blog before my attention completely goes back to what's on my workbench, I took some pictures of my recent works to share with you guys.<br />
<br />
A few years ago, I had developed a strange physical condition that made my hands shake out of the blue, which prevented me from doing intricate works like gold gilt/tooling. But it has gotten better and I haven't had the symptom little over a year.<br />
<br />
So now I've been able to tool without a fear of unpredictable sudden shakes that would ruin hours worth of the entire job; the tooling is done at the end of binding process. Here are a couple of books I finished recently. Both are facsimile bindings based on the original.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is a two volume set of <i>Breton's China</i>, four volumes bound into two. I forgot to note the publishing date, but it's probably 1813.<br />

<br />
This is <i>Travels in the Air</i> by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Glaisher" target="_blank">James Glaisher</a>, published in 1871. I neglected to take more "before pictures" of this binding, but the original was exactly the same as my facsimile; A quarter binding with <i>Antique Straight</i> marble.<br />

<br />
It's been over a year since my last post, but I haven't forgotten about my blog; I've just been too busy to pay attention to anything other than what's on my work bench. (I'm horrible at multi-tasking ..)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reason I decided to write this time is to remind folks, who are planing to get their Family Bible restored, of the importance of choosing the competent/experienced <u><i>real</i></u> restorer. There seem to be too many people who call themselves "bookbinders", with only a brief knowledge of binding books that they obtained from watching Youtube videos, attempting to "restore" books for profit, or binders whose binderies have been in business for decades, actually don't know what they are doing. Quite a few of such previously "restored" (or should I say <i>professionally damaged</i>..) books have come to us for re-restoration. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every book comes to us is priceless and irreplaceable, but when it comes to restoring Family Bibles, I always find myself feeling especially honored to be a part of their families' history of the past and future; I know Family Bibles are one thing that will be actually loved and cherished by many, for years to come. That is why restoration of Family Bibles has to be done right, the first time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few months ago, this Bible came to me. According to the client, it was restored not too long ago, but as it was exposed to humidity, it became a bit moldy. She wanted us to do something about it.<br />

<br />
Well, as you see on the before pictures, the problem is NOT really the mold. It certainly needs more than replacing the moldy endpapers and gluing back the spine. <u>EVERYTHING</u> the previous "binder" did was wrong, or should I say criminal. I was absolutely horrified when I saw the Bible. As an unspoken rule of being in a field of age-old craft like bookbinding, we don't really want to criticize fellow craftsmans' jobs; we just look away, keep our mouths shut, and mind our own business. Though I have warned people of incompetent binders' existence before, I normally don't actually show an example of bad restoration and say "This is bad". But I couldn't help it this time.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't think I need to point out what's wrong with the Bible because pictures show it. Again, all I can say is <u>EVERYTHING</u> this "binder" did was outrageously wrong. There's no indication of his/her having any knowledge what so ever of how to bind a book, let alone restore one. One thing you might not be able to see on the pictures is that the leather this binder used is not pared. Leather paring is the most basic skill any binders must have, by the way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Anyway, when you are thinking of restoring your Family Bible (or whatever books), do check the binder's works on the website first. And if you like what you see, preferably visit him/her to actually see/touch the works in person, because digital pictures can be deceiving nowadays.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I've started recording books that I've worked on in a logbook since 2008~2009, and the logbook is becoming full; I needed a new one made. Well, I've been really preoccupied with work and haven't gotten any time to do my personal stuff in the bindery, but boy, it's become serious! It has only a couple of pages left now. So, I finally decided to free up some time yesterday for a quick & easy yet cute binding with scrap materials that were scattered around the bindery.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is just a simple, nothing special, personal binding that might not be worth showing-off, but I thought it might give you some creative ideas for your project by using unconventional materials.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a quarter binding with a butt-jointed white snake and papyrus. They are super easy to work with, (idiot-proof!) yet the final product is cute and exotic. Just for the sake of the papyrus, I printed out some Egyptian hieroglyph graphics off internet and have used it as endsheets.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI2blIimu3b08phRf-HgIqspM9SYudamBCmJ1XmMmZ5wg7bkl544tIPa2PJVyscY4YqMs3i3mhx4YkBjOL_OAroR7YOO9_MBA6rrViRQuLOZCZUvRUF82sCrURPZsHqwInp0RAPA6p1O3A/s1600/snake+turtle+toad+skins.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI2blIimu3b08phRf-HgIqspM9SYudamBCmJ1XmMmZ5wg7bkl544tIPa2PJVyscY4YqMs3i3mhx4YkBjOL_OAroR7YOO9_MBA6rrViRQuLOZCZUvRUF82sCrURPZsHqwInp0RAPA6p1O3A/s200/snake+turtle+toad+skins.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
Snake is fun to work with because of their natural exotic markings; they come in different colors and textures as well. The things that you have to be careful of are the scales and the thickness and the width of the skin. Some snake skins have pretty good finish on the surface so that the scales don't easily fray, but they often don't. In that case, you have to make sure to tame the scales down by applying some adhesives after the book is bound, then wipe it off. Also, the thickness of the skins aren't uniform. The head/neck area is a lot thinner than the ones around the tail. It becomes obvious as the size of the snake gets bigger. For example, the neck area of Python is almost a paper thin, while the tail area is as thick as a card stock. So you have to determine which part of the snake is suitable for binding. Finally, as you know, most snakes are long and thin, thus there's a limit on the width. As the snake get's bigger, the skin gets also wider, but it gets thicker as well. Even if you find a beautifully marked skin, it might be too narrow for the size of your binding. Basically, you have to sort of give & take when working with snakes, or, for that matter, other exotic animal skins.</div>

My master once bound a 9"x 13" full Python binding by butt-jointing the skins, but it's an another matter. haha.. The binding was a bit too much, if you wanna know the truth!<br />
<br />
Other unconventional materials are fish skin, stingray, turtles and toad! Fish, toad and turtle skins can be used on the spine just like snake, but the stingray is too thick and stiff that it can't be used on the spine, though the unusual pearl marking is tempting to be used on the spine. I took some pictures of some of those materials, so check them out. - by the way, the small, palm size brown skins on the picture are of Cane Toad from Australia. They are so small that it had to be butt-jointed to be used on a binding. But hey Aussies! I heard you guys have an epidemic of those toads that are making your dogs high on its poisons in your yard. (hahaha. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2nu4-QBOxY" target="_blank"><i><b>Check this out</b></i></a>.) Don't just kill and dump them. Send me the skins! <div style="text-align: justify;">
Hellloooo everyone! Am baaaacckk!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And yes. I've been such a lazy slob in not paying attention to my blog all these months, and I suddenly realized it was already late October! - the realization came when I saw a bunch of kid-adults dressing as witches and Pres. Trump holding carved pumpkins. I wonder if Mr. Pres. is able to collect royalty paycheck every time someone buys his rubber masks or toilet paper rolls with his face printed on it, though I don't think he'd be interested in getting paid such a petty amount of money.</div>
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtGYIY1raPksEm8eKckVgSdBbeVbSaEtdjzODbf-lSZkKuruV4JuTvfqDjsr_CRRtyeyzg4fF67gU1_4Vt0l1uAHzf2EwQ5uFewyTtXNWU1oOGqWZf7rQop4Wysz7Y62_u93jT62T-i6no/s1600/Dresden+Codex+accordion+binding+limp+case+bone+clasp+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtGYIY1raPksEm8eKckVgSdBbeVbSaEtdjzODbf-lSZkKuruV4JuTvfqDjsr_CRRtyeyzg4fF67gU1_4Vt0l1uAHzf2EwQ5uFewyTtXNWU1oOGqWZf7rQop4Wysz7Y62_u93jT62T-i6no/s200/Dresden+Codex+accordion+binding+limp+case+bone+clasp+6.jpg" width="150" /></a>Anyway, before getting started on my next work, I decided to post one that I've finished last night. The client asked me to put a case on a manuscript that he printed and laminated by himself. It's <i><b><a href="http://www.famsi.org/mayawriting/codices/pdf/dresden_fors_schele_all.pdf" target="_blank">Dresden Codex</a></b></i> (<i>Códice de Dresde</i>), the oldest surviving Mayan manuscript that dates back to 13~14th century. Such a cool project. As his printed manuscript was already folded in an accordion style, we decided to do an accordion binding and a limp leather case with a bone clasp. I don't think I've shown a work with bone clasps here before, so here it is. Bone clasps are normally used for boxes, but it can be used for a normal binding as well. Because this is supposed to be an old ancient manuscript, I suggested to use bark paper to give a feel of an antiquity, along with an earthy green leather that he chose. It's 21cm x 11cm approx., true to the original size. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've had a personal project like this that I started several years back. It's the <i>Voynich</i> Manuscript. I downloaded it off the internet, and started putting it together digitally, intending to print it out so as to do a facsimile binding. Well, it's been put aside all these years. Like I said, I'm just being a lazy slob yet again on this as well. Hit me!</div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">It's a bit late, but a happy new year to ye' all ! I hope you are still sticking with the resolution that you made a month ago! (I gave up mine on the 3rd day. Ohh, typical me.)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">I haven't updated my blog for a while, but that doesn't mean I wasn't working, yo! I just got too preoccupied with work physically and mentally, so I neglected to do anything else other than what was in front of me. And what was in front of me last week was my seedy digital camera that was buried in my so called <i>junk box</i>. You know, one of those boxes or drawers in which you dump little stuff that you never use but can't somehow throw away, thinking that you might need them someday. Unmatched batteries, little toys that came with breakfast cereals, almost empty eye shadows and a <i>What-the-F**k-was-I-thinking-when-I-bought-it!?!</i> goth-black lipstick... For some reasons, I put my digital camera in there. humm,,, That's not good. I don't know how it got there, because once something goes to my junk box, it usually never sees daylight again. Kinda like a little black hole in my room.</span><br />

I hastily took a picture of a book that I was about to work on, with a bit of guilt. There were actually two books on my workbench at that time, - one is a first edition of <i>Rude Stone Monuments in All Countries</i> by James Fergusson, and the other is <i>Boucher on Forest Trees</i>, which I chose to post on my blog because of its leather marbling. I thought you guys might find an interest in some "forgotten art" aspect of this craft. This is a common traditional method of leather dyeing technique using acid - a mixture of potassium sulfate and ferrous sulfate which is applied onto running water on the surface of leather. This particular texture is called "tree marbling" because of its resemblance to tree branches. It's very common in antiquarian books, but I personally don't know many binders who do this marbling technique nowadays. I, for one, can't do it, so don't ask me how to do it properly! Well.. This is how old arts and crafts die, you know? There's no one who can teach us to inherit the knowledge to the next generation.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">This work required a rebacking of the spine, which needed to match the marbling texture of the original front and back boards. Matching the acid-based leather marbling is always tricky, and this one was no exception. I hope the client approves the result.. Oh, and, in case you are wondering about the spelling of <i>forest</i> on the skiver label, I did a double R because the original was spelled like that. I don't know if it's an original binder's mistake, but hey, I must follow the client's instruction.</span><br />

<br />
People dressing up as <i>bigfoot</i> and <i>cat woman</i> have disappeared from the street, and a long, hard fought battle of the U.S. presidential election has finally come to an end. Whether or not the result was in your favor, now it's time to shift your focus into a positivity. What's done is done, and anger and frustration only create more anger, eh? Suppose, you drop $100 bill, and keep whining and frustrated about it for a long time. What does it create? You are making yourself miserable by thinking about it on top of the fact that you lost $100. It's a double whammy, yo! So, now, get serious about how big of a turkey you should roast for Thanksgiving (haha...) and what to get for Christmas for your loved ones. I always say this around this time of the year, but please don't bring Christmas rush jobs at the last minute! We might close Christmas orders as early as two weeks prior to Christmas depending on how backed-up we are. So gather up your ideas and get here quickly!<br />
<br />
This is one of our very organized client's Christmas restoration jobs that was sent in a few weeks ago. This is a fourth edition of <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Carol" target="_blank">A Christmas Carol</a></i>, 1844. Although it's a fourth edition, it's still a pricey book. So needless to say, all original material had to be preserved and the restoration must be done as invisible as possible. Restoring old cloth binding can be tricky as matching a new material to the original takes some skills. <i>Master</i> thinks I'm better at it, so it came to my workbench.<br />
<br />
Well, if you know anyone who resembles <i>$$</i> Old Scrooge <i>$$</i>, remind him of this classic again. It's never too late!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
I was pretty determined to make more rapid progress on the two works of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Penn" target="_blank">William Penn</a> when I walked into the bindery on Thursday. No sooner had I gotten in than a bag of cookies on the counter got my full, I mean, FULL attention; Our current intern, Ms.S brought us homemade oatmeal raisin cookies. Oh, heck. Cookies first, work second. Common sense, yo! As I was hogging down the cookies like I haven't eaten for a week, an image of the <a href="http://www.quakeroats.com/" target="_blank"><i>Quaker Oats</i> dude</a> kept coming to my mind; his peculiar smile interfering with my pleasure time of the sweet deliciousness, as if to tell me to shift my focus back to work. Duh! Stop it! Stop smiling! Who is this Quaker dude, anyway!<br />
<br />
So I googled it. ....<br />
<br />
And, his identity turned out to be ... ahh... none other than William Penn, indeed...... coincidence? uhh... you tell me, crazy paranormal junkies!<br />
<br />
So the books here are two different works by William Penn. One is a first edition <i>Wisdom Justified </i>published in 1673. And the other is <i>A Treatise of Oaths</i>, also a first edition published in 1713. Basically, the client asked me to bind them identically based on the original cover of <i>A Treatise of Oaths</i>. I could simply blind-tool the <i>Cambridge</i> just like the original, but it was rather too boring, to be honest. So I decided to add another layer of mottling to give an extra dimension; you can easily make normally a too rigid <i>Cambridge</i> prettier by doing multiple layers. ;-)<br />

Boy, you can find anything online nowadays, eh? I digitally cleaned it up and printed it on a 17th century antique paper. - we keep a collection of antique papers of different eras for these sort of jobs. (Just like forgers would. sheeee!)<br />
One interesting thing about this work is that <i>Wisdom Justified</i> has a hand written note by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Whitehead_(Quaker_leader)" target="_blank">George Whitehead</a>, one of the original Quaker leaders with whom Penn had debated on the foundation of Quakerism. The note suggests the book was a gift from Penn.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I briefly mentioned <i>onlay</i> on <a href="http://bookbinderschronicle.blogspot.com/2016/07/bertuchs-bilderbuch-fur-kinder.html" target="_blank">my previous post</a>, so I thought I might as well share a binding with <i>butt-joints</i> this time. Butt-joint, as you can imagine, is a method of which two or more pieces of cover materials are butt-jointed to form a multicolored/textured surface. It can be done in book cloth, fabric or leather as the binding shown on this post. This is such an excellent way to express your artistic creativity, as well as to recycle scrap that's too small to use for normal bindings. ;-) It's sort of like quilting, you see?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
An important thing that you need to concern is the thickness of the materials. Each piece must be of the same thickness, or the surface won't be flat. And make sure to cut each piece precisely and butt-joint the edges seamlessly. - you don't want to see any gaps between the patterns!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This book is about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sioux" target="_blank">Sioux Indians</a>, and the client asked me to create a design that reflects their traditional <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plains_hide_painting" target="_blank">hide paintings</a> used for crafts such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parfleche" target="_blank">parfleches</a>. Well, their geometric patterns and graphics are perfect for a butt-joint binding, so I’ve decided to use the method along with onlays. - the red banners are onlayed and the zigzag background consists of butt-jointed kid and calf hides.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is an autographed, first edition copy of <i>Land of Nakoda, The Story of the Assiniboine Indians</i>, by James L. Long and William Standing. (1942)</div>

<br />
One of the frustrating medical conditions I've developed is sudden trembling / painful cramps of my hands and fingers, which had gotten so bad a few years ago that I really had to take time off from work for a long long time. The thing is, you can't bind a book when your hands are screwed up. It's the worst thing that can happen to a bookbinder.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This particular condition has gotten better these days, so the last few months, I decided to work on books that required relatively heavy tooling. This is one of them; <i><a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderbuch_f%C3%BCr_Kinder" target="_blank">Bilderbuch für Kinder</a></i> by <a href="https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich_Justin_Bertuch" target="_blank">F. J. Bertuchs</a>. Though my hands' spasm bullshit had gotten quieter and less frequent, a slight trembling tends to start whenever my mind focuses on my fingers, and the more I focus, the bigger the trembling becomes.. It's a strange medical mystery, and I tell you what; IT'S F***ING ANNOYING! (excuse me for my French..)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Anyway, one of our regular clients brought this three-volume set of Bertuchs' <i>Bilderbuch für Kinder</i> a few years ago, - just around the time I started getting really sick, and it has been put aside until now due to my absence. I feel absolutely horrible about this delay, but now it's done! He brought a picture of a set of volumes (pictured left) and asked for a brand new leather binding just like that. As you see on the picture, the volume numbers are tooled on <i>onlay</i>; a thinly skived leather is trimmed in shape and glued directly onto the surface, then the edge is tooled blind or in gold afterwards. It's a common practice, but I don't think I've shown an example of <i>onlay</i> on my blog before, so I decided to post this work here this time. You can have fun with <i>onlay</i> for your personal project for sure! But make sure to skive the leather well, and tool the edge afterwards. Or, the leather piece will peel off easily, and let me just be frank; it just simply doesn't look good. ;-)<br />
<br />
<i>Bilderbuch für Kinder, </i>translates as "picture book for children" in German, is filled with lots of coolest picture plates. I'll try to put some of them up on my blog when I get a chance. ;-)<br />
----UPDATE----<br />
The volumes have been picked up before I took photos of the picture plates.. So I can't put them on my blog. Sorry!</div>

I realized I haven't posted anything since the new year began, and as it so happened I've kept <i>before</i> pictures of this particular client's books, I just took <i>after </i>pictures of the latest work and decided to put it up. And though it's a month and half late, a happy new year to ya' all! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The book is <i>The Civil Wars of Spain</i> by Prudencio de Sandoval, (1652). The client asked for a brand new leather binding as one of the original boards was missing. The leather is dyed to make it look appropriate for the era and I chose a red skiver as it was common around the time. I used the raw flyleaf as endpapers for this binding though I normally don't do that. In case some of you aren't familiar with flyleaf, it's the blank sheets at the beginning and the end of a book. Yeah, THAT blank pages got a name just like anything else in the world. haha.. Anyway, traditionally, a book is cased-in with flyleaf as endpapers, and then, if it's preferred, endpapers are laminated onto it afterwards. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD0Ti986fxBrJP8Oy483xboOTxCiz-eHWowdFHher0l73GI75q5qqklJKDlv5IXhnTlFKgD-YsP6vRwuozKzDxs_nwrQ6UMqcSb76Tb64rPEoXtJKztAE8c3gGyDrKDktrZqzkg8tA5W_V/s1600/The+Civil+Wars+of+Spain+Sandoval+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD0Ti986fxBrJP8Oy483xboOTxCiz-eHWowdFHher0l73GI75q5qqklJKDlv5IXhnTlFKgD-YsP6vRwuozKzDxs_nwrQ6UMqcSb76Tb64rPEoXtJKztAE8c3gGyDrKDktrZqzkg8tA5W_V/s200/The+Civil+Wars+of+Spain+Sandoval+5.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
There was a sheet of unrelated, incomplete manuscripts sewn as a part of original flyleaf on each front and back of the book, and the client asked me to take them out as he was curious as to what they were. When you take out things like this from a book, you gotta make sure to indicate where they came from, in case they are separated from the book. Or you never know what the hell they are!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
By the way, to update my health status, I'm doing a lot better! Thank you! I hope it keeps getting better!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
We have a rather strict "unwritten policy" (or should I say a common sense?) not to read clients' hand written personal notes and records. But when it comes to very old documents and manuscripts, we certainly get fascinated of checking them out! (duh,,, that's one of the most beautiful aspects of having a job that handles "history", eh?) This torn notebook came in several months ago, and I finally get to work on it. A straightforward job: a brand-new facsimile binding. A suitable job for a binder with not so much energy. The name of the author is Robert Simonson, whose hand-writing is magnificent. ( Boy, people used to write beautifully, you know?) Some pages are written in Hebrew and Greek, and a language that's unknown to me, along with some hand drawn illustrations of landscapes. A very mysterious book for sure. Though the writings are beautiful (or maybe because of it), I had hard time reading his cursive letters! So, I couldn't precisely figure out who he actually was. But looks like he was on board, not as a captain or crew, but as an investor of some kind? - There are pages containing the records of money movements of hundreds and thousands!? You know of how much a thousand dollars is equivalent to that of today's!? Well, whoever Mr. Simonson was, he sure was a helluva rich dude with an impeccable writing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM1BvdjIoAVdkAqtTbUs32v0gGeXNheQTCL0H5Fhn0WC7LKrw4XmZ0_hfhj18PSw3bMe8OYOBZZmvs_72kbMVHtw9Qg9bZAFw-9I5sIbYPbxBnVvKl-FxGqN8Z561ETntHWpD46YbNPkLo/s1600/The+Barque+Ferry+Robert+Simonson+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="105" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM1BvdjIoAVdkAqtTbUs32v0gGeXNheQTCL0H5Fhn0WC7LKrw4XmZ0_hfhj18PSw3bMe8OYOBZZmvs_72kbMVHtw9Qg9bZAFw-9I5sIbYPbxBnVvKl-FxGqN8Z561ETntHWpD46YbNPkLo/s640/The+Barque+Ferry+Robert+Simonson+5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, the client asked for a brand new facsimile half binding with a similar marble paper. The thing about this book is that there are two different notebooks combined together, meaning that they were bound together after these notebooks were filled. ( Bound by a stationary firm out of New York, <i>Jansen & Bell</i>, so I guess this notebook is from mid to late 19th century.) So the first half and last part are different in sizes. In a case like this, you have to "jog" to the top when sewing, yeah? It's OK to have a book that's not "flush" on the bottom, but not OK if the top edge is ragged.<br />
<br />
The restoration of this book involved a complete resewing, custom leather dying, antiquing of endpaper to match the preserved half endpaper, sewn headbands and paper restoration.<br />
<br />
Oh, by the way, regarding our "unwritten policy", if you put "My Hate List" on the last page of your childhood diary, we can't help but read it. So be aware. hahaha. (I don't know what he did, but she hated you, Mike.. )</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Whoa! Long time no see! But, I'm still hanging in there, binding books and all. ;-) I'm able to work more now than a few months back, and hopefully my health continues to improve as time goes on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since I had considerable time, off and on, being away from work for the last couple of years, I've found myself pondering about things that able people would quip sarcastically as "things that people with too much free time would think", like about my goddamn life and existence and such. haha.. My life, humm, it's so strange that I no longer do or find interest in what I used to love. I'm more and more introverted and antisocial than ever. Everything seems so tedious to me. Last time I got a snippet of excitement outside of the bindery was when my $5-off punch card at nearby Taco joint became full. - As soon as I notice an instant smirk on my darn face, I wanted to smack my head with the corny picture of a smiling bikini chick on a Mexican beach hanging on the wall behind me. What the heck has become of me!<br />
<br />
Like, I used to love traveling. It didn't matter whether to a foreign country or a planned two-week vacation. But whenever I got a chance, I tried to explore the world outside of my daily mundane-ness. - it was as simple as hopping on a random bus and see where it takes me, or as stupid as spontaneously buying a ticket to Edinburgh with knowing that my apartment lease would be up and I wouldn't have a place to sleep when I get back. haha.. Reckless, I know, but that was when I was young and fearless. The thing is, the world seems to be a lot brighter then than now, which seemed to have been continuing to get dimmer and dimmer. Sigh... But, you know what? When your health isn't 100%, you could become the biggest pessimist on the planet.<br />
<br />
Well, anyway, as I flipped through this binding to see if any foreign objects were stuck in the signatures, and as I was doing so, I angle-read the contents a little bit. Fascinating. This is <i><b><a href="https://archive.org/details/sketchesoftourto00cumi" target="_blank">Sketches of a tour to the western country</a></b>: through the states of Ohio and Kentucky, a voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and a trip through the Mississippi territory, and part of West Florida, commenced at Philadelphia in the winter of 1807, and concluded in 1809</i>, by Fortescue Cuming, published in 1810. The way of writing and its description of the places and his experiences seem very straightforward without any hard cynicism or sarcasm, yet with consistent honest subtle humor. You see lots of travel essays out there, old or new, that seem to try hard to get your vote by being a cynic, often too critical of the places and its culture as much. But this one's very easy for the reader to get the "picture" because it doesn't seem to be too opinionated. Very positive writing. I can easily fall in love with the featured places and its people of good-ol' America. There's not much info on the author, but I can imagine Mr. Cuming to be a well-to-do Englishman of free spirit! This book reminded me of what I used to be and made me a bit nostalgic..<br />
<br />
This restoration involved a new full facsimile binding with a custom-mottled leather, sewn headbands, antiqued endpapers and some paper mending.</div>

<br />
Traditional photo albums are simply destined to get broken in a messy way because of its construction and often unconventional covers and materials. So, restoring them can be a bit troublesome, and I have to admit that they often end up getting onto our work benches last. Sorry! If you are a client who left a photo album with us and reading this, forgive us! But you gotta have to have a certain mind set to work on (messy) photo albums because it just can be tedious! It normally involves reconstructing / guarding the hinge of each page/panel and it's mentally exhausting, really.. Job itself is not complicated, but is a rather mundane task that sort of eats at you gradually. Ugh..</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here's one of those poor photo albums which neither of us, me or <i>master,</i> wanted to touch for a long, long time.... But like I said, we have to be in a certain mind state to tackle messy photo albums. Thank GOD it didn't have a radically raised "dome" cover boards with embroidery or naughty stuffing, or wooden skeletons underneath that stuck to the cover material like Siamese twins! This just involved reconstruction of the hinges and simple re-hinging, Whew! One problem, which resulted in our avoidance from it, other than a boring task of hinge reconstruction, was the warped boards. The pictures aren't really capturing it, but it was bad. I couldn't heat-press them because of the photographs, so all I could do was to straighten them by cold-pressing as much as I could. It looks a lot better, (mind you), and has indeed eased the degree of warping. But still, it's a bit wobbly. Well, it's gonna have to live with that and it's the fate of this photo album. Can't fight the fate sometimes!<br />
<br />
This is a collection of photographs of Hawaii, presented to members of <i>The Ladies of the Altar Society of Honolulu</i> in 1888.</div>

<br />
Ugh,, where do I start.. First, my apology for my sudden disappearance and making you guys worry! Second, my yet - again apology for not responding to any of your e-mails, comments and inquiries. Ugh.. I'm soooooo sorry..<br />
<br />
But hey, I'm still alive, yo!! (Remember when Dr. Frankenstein's creature <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuoKNZjr8_U" target="_blank">came alive</a>? haha, it kinda feels like it.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, the thing is, as some of you might have guessed, I've fallen ill, which became sever enough overtime to pardon myself almost completely from work and any social activities. So, for the last year or so, I really had neither time nor energy to do anything other than to focus on my health and recovery.<br />
<br />
As the amount of e-mails I've received during the time was staggering, and I'm not completely out of the woods yet, please allow me to use this opportunity to thank all of you who sent me emails regarding my standing. Thank you, from my heart.<br />
<br />
I won't be able to work full time for a while, so my blog won't be updated as often as before, and won't be able to respond to your inquires promptly, for that I, in advance apologize, sincerely. Be patient with me. ;-)<br />
<br />
So, anyhow, a few days ago, maybe because the weather was so nice and warm, I felt a lot better and decided to get to work. This is the finished book: <i><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Annual_Register" target="_blank">The Annual Register</a>, or a view of the History, Politics and Literature for the year 1782</i>. (London, printed for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Dodsley" target="_blank">J. Dodsley</a>, 1783) The original was a typical half binding with nonpareil marble, but the client asked for a new full leather with custom mottling. I dyed the leather a couple of years ago, for future use, and at last it's been bound! As you see, I did a quick <i>Cambridge</i> on this one though the client didn't specifically ask for it. I just felt better that day, and wanted to do something little more than a plain, rather boring full leather binding. I hope he likes it.</div>

I've never missed posting a thing or two on my blog every month since I started it, but I did last month. It's really not a big deal, but I sort of feel "defeated".. What I mean is I hadn't felt good and had been unable to work full time since I came back from the trip mainly because of a severe jet lag and chronic shoulder/back pains triggered by my flight back home. But, I've been back to work almost full time since last week, and this time, (for the May-post sake!) I made sure to take a few "before pictures" of what I was to work on. And this happened to be the job.</div>

This is a second edition, 4 volume set of <i><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica" target="_blank">Encyclopædia Britannica</a></i> published in 1778~9. This is a broken set, - it has volume 1(all plates), 3, 4 and 5, but is missing volumes 1 and 2. The client is a dear regular, so when other volumes are found, he'd bring them next time. He has asked us to rebind them in full leather with a facsimile spine lay out. Generally, <i>Encyclopædia Britannica</i> has red and black skivers, but for these editions, I used an olive color for both, as the client wanted them in identical colors. Two of the volumes were missing headbands, so they needed to be re-sewn. And there were some papers that needed to be mended, but other than that, this was a straightforward rebinding work. It just took me a lot longer than usual to complete because I'm still not in a perfect health and am not like myself yet.. sigh, I gotta go pop some aspirin now.. bummer.. <br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
P.S. My trip to Asia went well. Japan trip was reasonably productive without much dramas, - I got some Japanese paring knives for my folks and a blog buddy on the East coast, and excellent mending papers, as well. ;-) and the Singapore trip was fun, except for the day-one being hit by an unbelievable rainstorm till about mid-afternoon. WoW, I've never experienced rain like that!?! Anyway, one major regret was not bringing more $$$$$ to Singapore. Boy, how the heck do people live there?? I mean, I was warned about everything being super expensive, but when I saw a can of the cheapest beer at $8, I almost fainted. (hahaha) But I will go back there, certainly with friends next time. In all in all, I had a great time!</div>

My trip to Asia is coming up in a week, but I don't think I've told you I'll be in Hawaii for a couple of weeks in June. (I, too, need a vacation once in awhile..) While I'm not so enthused about this upcoming multiple-week-long Asia trip to be honest with you, I'm very much looking forward to spending time under the bright sun shines on the white beaches with a dozen cans of macadamia nuts and a *complimentary* six-pack, staying at a backpacker's lodge while hiking up to the Kīlauea (which I hope would shoot up some lavas just for my amusement. Pray for me for that to happen!), and scuba diving for the first time! (I'm gonna have to get new swimsuits cuz I don't think anyone wanna see 30-some-year-old in bikinis,, Aging sucks. haha..) And I can't wait to see my friend whom I haven't seen for years! (Her lovely hubbie's in the military, so they relocate too often,,) Ah, Two more months, M.! Two more months until the Aloha State! I'm gonna be getting rid of my super pale skin there a bit. hohoho.</div>

He's published multiple journals chronicling his experiences and records of the lives and customs of the natives. This is one of his first journals; <i><b>Narrative of a Tour Through Hawaii</b>: Or Owhyhee; with Observations on the Nature of the Sandwich Islands, and Remarks on the Manners, Customs, Traditions, History, and Language of the Inhabitants</i>, published by H. Fisher, Son, and P. Jackson. (London, 1826.) If you look close, the gold ornaments on the spine are pineapples. Haha, that's cute and,, made me hungry just now. (humm pineapples!) Anyway, the restoration was relatively uncomplicated and straightforward; re-hinging and internal hinge mending as well as minor corner repairs. But I thought I might as well share some of the plates in this book that show how thing were back then, back when there were no mega hotel resorts and what not...<br />
(These are digital camera photo shots, and aren't scanned by a scanner. So, pardon me for the strange yellowness of the images..) <br />

Along with <i>Bibles</i>, cookbooks are one of the most restored books in our bindery. That's actually understandable really, as they are, like <i>Bibles</i>, the most personal, sweetest, aesthetically sound, virtually perfect heritage that moms can leave with their families for the generations to come. Whenever I hear someone say "this is my grandma's recipe!" or "this recipe's been in my family for generations!", I see their genuine smiles with a humble pride and a hint of nostalgia, which melts my heart! Yet, then I would get hit with a bit of envy and a sudden sadness of the fact that I'll never be able to taste my grandma's cuisines any more; my family doesn't have a tradition of keeping anything written...... (Duh! Grandma! You had a stack of pens n' pencils n' tiny notebooks in THAT impeccably crafted, spectacularly beautiful stationary holder you made and kept next to you all the time since I was a toddler!? Why the heck didn't you use it and write sh*t down for me before you went!? .. utterly puzzling and unequivocally frustrating ...)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOdNN6Umqj3S5pe6KBZX5PLHq3KlxJUSmDRVcb3Nb7iGI41kkOwTGbHI2nwpyswjM3BGWmv2efacpVh3RrcKlMwjwE0c-wmimc5xUd7h09cy9A1SqeldOy5uixYv5RgviBuX-E7WPQRJlH/s1600/My+New+Better+Homes+and+Gardens+Cookbook+miscellaneous+folder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOdNN6Umqj3S5pe6KBZX5PLHq3KlxJUSmDRVcb3Nb7iGI41kkOwTGbHI2nwpyswjM3BGWmv2efacpVh3RrcKlMwjwE0c-wmimc5xUd7h09cy9A1SqeldOy5uixYv5RgviBuX-E7WPQRJlH/s1600/My+New+Better+Homes+and+Gardens+Cookbook+miscellaneous+folder.jpg" height="150" width="200" /></a></div>
Anyhow, if you are an American, you probably have seen this cookbook in the kitchen, or a different edition of this one of the most popular and adored cookbooks of all time. (along with <i>Joy of Cooking</i>, <i>Betty Crocker's</i>, <i>American Woman's</i>, etc.) This is a 1938 edition of <i>My New Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook</i>. This is an earlier edition of this series, so the cover design is different; you might be more familiar with the latter edition design of a red and white checker cover. Like many American cookbooks, this is in a ring-holder binder, which is seemingly clever as a cookbook because you can add and subtract whatever you want. But on the other hand, once the cover is broken (inevitably on the hinges), it's sort of tricky to restore due to the ring fixture on the spine which is permanently fixated with a couple of screws through the cover material inside and out. So, the restoration needs to be done without breaking the fixtures apart. Also, the holes on each page get easily torn over time, so putting hole reinforcement (acid-free) stickers is recommended; but you need to be careful because pages would expand on the spine due to the thickness of the stickers. One thing moms in general love to do is to leave pieces of hand-written recipe notes and recipe clippings of magazines inside cookbooks. Making a secondary miscellaneous pocket or folder for them is always a good idea, in order to prevent those loose papers from going missing over time. For this particular cookbook, I used an ordinary clear plastic folder cut to size and added the custom made folder in the ring binder; the client's secret family recipes will be kept forever! </div>

Yes, I survived the least favorite, dullest month of the year again. Thank you God, it's over! It turned out today was the nicest, warmest day in 4, 5 months, but I've been working away at the backlogs from the basement, missing the rare bright friendly rays of the sunshine..<br />
Some of you, my dear visitors of my blog, had been concerned something might have happened to me and e-mailed me because I hadn't posted anything on my blog, and virtually disappeared over a month. (Thank you for your concern! It means alot to me. ;-) Well, the thing is, I'll have to be out of town for a few weeks beginning at the end of March through April, (I'll be in Japan and Singapore.) so I really needed to get those backlogs moved ahead before I leave. So, I've been forgetting to take time to snap shots of my works and what not. But now, I realized it was already the last day of February, (One of the reasons why I don't like February is the fact it's short! It just doesn't feel "right", you know? Like, "Ohh sh*t,, I gotta have to pay rent already?" ,,) and I forgot to take <i>before pictures</i> of what I've been working on. So, there isn't anything to show you this time, other than the one shown here; the lifeless body of an exhausted binder..<br />
<br />
But I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm still here! ;-)</div>

<br />
I was working on this three-volume-set of a first edition, <i>The Works Of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe" target="_blank">Edgar Allan Poe</a></i>, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons (1905), yesterday when I realized it was Poe's 205th birthday the day before, after reading a news article about his unidentified mysterious follower, nicknamed the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe_Toaster" target="_blank">Poe Toaster</a>". Apparently, he, the "Poe Toaster" who bears a cane and wears a cloak, had been showing up at Poe's grave on his birthday at midnight since the centennial anniversary of Poe’s death of 1949. He leaves a half drunk bottle of <i>Martell</i> cognac and three roses arranged the exact same way each time, then would disappear into the night. To this day, no one knows who he is. But it seems that he hasn't been seen since the Poe's 200th birthday in 2009. Hummm, maybe, the original "Poe Toaster" who's said to have died in the 90's intended to continue this tradition until Poe's 200th birthday, so the person who was passes this ritual after his death stopped it as instructed? Well, it's a mystery for sure.<br />
<br />
Anyway, the client of these volumes asked for brand new facsimile bindings as the original soft leather cases were in horrible, deteriorating shape. My work was to make simple French joint new leather bindings for these tiny books. And the floral ornament on the spine wasn't too complicated to imitate. So, I've been having rather stress free few days, while <i>Master</i>'s been working on an extra large folio book with tons of paper mending for the last four days. hohoho. It must really suck to be him. ha! <--evil<br />
<br />
The client also brought another three-volume-set of different titles and publisher to restore in the same way, so for the sake of it, I'm posting a picture of that as well, though they are <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Waldo_Emerson" target="_blank">Emerson</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudyard_Kipling" target="_blank">Kipling</a> by T. Y. Crowell & co.</div>

called stars, air planes, satellites or meteorites. Though I've heard
unusual sounds after dark, they most likely were an old pipe squeaking

what to have for dinner. Though I've captured ominous images on photos,
they probably were due to reflections, dust particles, BBQ smoke or my

thought it was just another burnt toast without realizing it was
actually Him. (oops, sorry.. So, I took a picture of my lunch today to

don't get obsessed about pursuing the proof of the existence of those
phenomena. However, I think I'd probably wish ghost phenomenon would be
truly real if I lost someone who's very special to me. I'd wish him/her
to show up as a ghost so that I could see and talk to them once again,
even for a minute. So, I could relate to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Lodge" target="_blank">Sir Oliver Lodge</a>
who got into the field of paranormal after the death of his beloved
son, and wrote a book about his son and his experiments on the subject.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Well, the book involved in the work posted here was by Sir Lodge, so I just wrote that. But anyway, the client has a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Houdini" target="_blank">Houdidni</a>'s personal copy of <i>Raymond or Life and Death by Sir Oliver Lodge</i>,
and asked for a clamshell box for it. Since the book is the copy owned
by H. Houdini himself, the client asked for a clamshell in full leather
to make it more special. For any leather boxes, you can easily make them
look like normal books on the shelf by making the spine slightly round,
and they would look more like real books with raised cords, etc.- A
little trick binders do. Well, it can be a secret box disguising as <i>Joy of Cooking</i>
in which you hide a stash of cash behind your spouse's back! haha. - In
fact, an acquaintance of mine has asked me to make a "fake-book" box
titled in some innocent phrases like "<i>My Life</i>" in order to hide his weed in it. (hahahaHA!) .... I declined, needless to say..</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But... Ahhhh! Americans! (hahaha... You can't help but love their easy-going nature!)

The chosen, first book of the year 2014 to be featured on my blog is..... <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnie-the-Pooh" target="_blank">Winnie the Pooh</a>! tataa~!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the last of the series of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._A._Milne" target="_blank">A. A. Milne</a>'s Pooh Bear poem book, first American edition of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_We_Are_Six" target="_blank"><i>Now We Are Six</i></a>, illustrated by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._H._Shepard" target="_blank">E. H. Shepard</a>, published by E. P. Dutton & Co. (New York, 1927) It's kinda sad that it's missing the dust jacket, but the client isn't concerned about its market value or what not. It's a sentimental, priceless piece of her childhood that needs to be in her family for generations. The restoration involved was new spine re-hinging without gold lettering, internal cloth hinges, complete resewing, minor corner repairs and some paper mending. </div>

I've put up some pictures of the illustrations here for you guys, because who doesn't like Pooh Bear?! The cutest and the most delightful little thing on the planet next to <i>Honey Boo Boo</i>! (arrr, Am being sarcastic. My bad, my bad.) But, I tell you what.. When I was checking out those adorable illustrations with a face full of spontaneous smiles, <i>master</i> mumbled something with giggles. He whispered, "Now we are sixty.." *giggle giggle grin*... Yes, you ARE indeed sixty, alright. Duh. But now, I can't stop imagining Pooh Bear with a bending back, walking awkwardly with a swinging cane, cursing at random things like an old geezer, Yo! Thanks a lot, <i>master</i> for feeding me the awful images!!<br />
<br />
But if you really think about it, Pooh, after all, is 88 years old as of 2014 actually... oh boy.. Truth hurts sometimes. (haha..) Anyway.. Happy New Year, guys! </div>

I posted some pictures of <a href="http://bookbinderschronicle.blogspot.com/2012/08/ancora-de-salvacion-1865.html" target="_blank">one of those books</a> about a year ago, and I could see that others love them as much as I do. (based on the large number of visitors to the particular post.) So, I'm posting another one here. This is a miniature <i>Holy Bible</i>, published by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Nelson_%28publisher%29" target="_blank">Thomas Nelson & Sons</a> in 1860. This humble black leather <i>Bible</i> turned into an eye candy of a treasure with a brass uni-clasp and ornate edging, - the design of which feels as though it were influenced a bit by <a href="https://www.artsy.net/artist/william-morris" target="_blank"><i>William Morris</i></a> or a precursor to <i>Art Nouveau</i> of England. It's very pretty.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for the restoration, client asked for a simple re-backing with false-raised cords on the spine without any gold lettering. A trouble we normally encounter when dealing with a book with metal edging is the lifting or removing of the edging pieces in order to re-back or re-hinge the spine. For this <i>Bible</i>, because it wasn't wise (or possible) to remove the whole metal pieces, I lifted small sections up enough so that I could do my job, and they were gently hammered back to the original state. I'm so glad it's done in time.. I personally have only a couple of more Christmas orders to go, Yay! ;-)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
On my post on <i><a href="http://bookbinderschronicle.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-voyage-to-pacific-ocean-by-captain.html" target="_blank">Cook's Voyage</a></i>, my friend and colleague, <a href="http://artacartii.blogspot.ro/" target="_blank">Mihai</a> from Romania, left a brief, yet commissarial comment about a daily dilemma that "common" bookbinders have to face, which prompted me to write this post. The following is his comment, (copy-pasted);</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
-------------</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Very very beautiful! In my experience, I m faced with a dilemma: doing the best restoration job I can or listening to what the client wants. I ve often volunteered to sew a book on my own time when the client just wanted it glued, so it would cost less, because the book was worth it. I feel bad doing a cheap job, but I realize not every client affords intricate and laborious solutions. That s why now I tend to be less critical of poor bindings I see from older binders, because I realize that even if they wanted and knew how to do better, the clients would have refused and stuck with the cheap versions. Thank you for sharing!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
-------------</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This matter is so close to home to me as a "common-public-serving" restorer that I wanted to fly to Romania on the first flight available just to be able to put my hand on his shoulder, and say "I hear you, man..". (haha...)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We, the common binders, serve mostly for the ordinary folks often with limited funds, so we have to balance and find a solution as to what's best for the client and what's best for the book. Like Mihai, although my clients wouldn't know this, I often end up doing way more than I'm paid for because I can't possibly do less of a work just because the money's not enough. Money, after all, is a mere object. My dignity as a craftswoman and the destiny of books I handle, aren't.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This, rather old fashioned sentiment of mine sometimes can't really apply when the uncompromisable required labor exceeds well beyond the client's budget, resulting the client to lean towards an "option" that totally undermines the quality of work. In a rare case like this, my answer always is and has been and will be; I could not possibly put my name on a kind of job that you are asking me to do. Take my word or leave it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A situation like this is rare yet has happened before, but clients always understood where I came from and chose to go with my direction though I, of course, spent extra labors each time. The bottom line is, I always take any job regardless if my belief and sincerity are received, and do the best and right thing for the book despite my labor, every time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remember, "You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you." Again, money is a mere object, guys. ;-)</div>

I loved that bone folder. It was entrusted to me by my <i>master</i>, and I fashioned it in a particular shape and etched my initial on it. The bone folder was amber in color and somewhat transparent, and I loved that about it, too. Well, some god damn bastard took it. I don't blame him/her though, because the bone folder was really nice looking.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Normally, when I lost something, or something was taken from me, or something bad has happened, I'm always like, " Well, I'm glad it wasn't my wallet that was lost." or "I broke my legs, but I'm glad my arms are alright." or "Maybe, the person who took my $20 hadn't eaten anything for a week, and was desperate. I may well have saved his life." The point is, I sort of take matters like these real easy. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But, this bone folder incident had been bugging me so bad that I just couldn't get over it. I even dreamed about it, too. It was that serious. Losing something so personal and special to me is bad enough, and keeping myself feel miserable over it is even worse. So, I decided to give myself another bone folder. - It's similar to giving a new pet to someone who can't get over the death of their pet in order to recover from the grief. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I never like commercially available bone folders which have no character, so I bought a couple of pieces of Camel bone, and made a new bone folder today. I choose Camel bone because it's off white and has a really nice translucent caramel texture. Bone folders are super simple and easy to make. - All you need is a saw, file, different grits of sand paper from rough to fine, a piece of leather to polish at the end. It should only take about an hour and half to two hours to make it, so, you should try it, too. ;-)<br />
